FOUR PREACHERS: This photo from Germany shows four preachers who eventually came to the United States to be pastors: (from left) Rev. Harbuziuk, Rev. Dmytro Marychuk, Rev. Stepan Nischik (1908-1981) and Rev. Gregory Domashovetz.
The Ukrainian Baptist Church in Cornberg, Germany, is depicted in 1946 or 1947. Pastor Harbuziuk and his wife, Sophia, are seated in the middle of the second row. The first man on the left in the second row is Gabriel Blonsky. In the front row, the third person from left is Lydia Hochhalter (Myrosznyk), who married John Puknaitis in Chicago. Fourth from right is Kathy Bilecka, who married Michael Bereza in Chicago. Lydia and Kathy remained lifelong friends.
* On May 12, 1949, Rev. Harbuziuk and Rev. Marychuk attended the opening of the Ukrainian Free Academy of Sciences in Leipheim.
* Rev. Harbuziuk accompanied Rev. Marychuk, president of the Ukrainian Evangelical Baptist Church in Germany, on a trip May 13, 1949 from Leipheim to Munich for discussions with the relocation commission and for meetings of the church council. On May 14, they visited believers in Augsburg.
* Rev. Harbuziuk and Rev. Dmytro Marychuk attended a pastors conference that was held May 31 to June 2, 1949 in Prien, Bavaria, Germany.
* On June 6, 1949, Rev. Harbuziuk and Rev. Marychuk visited the museum of the Ukrainian Free Academy of Sciences and viewed a display of evangelical Baptist literature.
* Rev. Harbuziuk attended the fourth annual conference of the Ukrainian Evangelical Baptist Church in Germany, which was held June 12-14 in Munich. He preached a sermon and gave a report as editor of "The Way of Truth" magazine. He also wrote an article about the conference that was printed in the magazine.

Завжди, коли я читаю вище згадані слова Євангелії – мені приходить на пам’ять визначний, баптистський діяч – пастор Олекса Романович Гарбузюк.
Моя особиста зустріч із пастором О.Р. Гарбузюком сталась в осени 1950-го року, коли ми приїхали до ЧікаҐо. В ЧікаҐо вже існувала Українська Баптистська Церква, де брат Олекса Романович ніс пасторське служіння.
Яскраво пам’ятаю його тепле і увічливе вітання нашої родини, а ще краще пам’ятаю його енергічні проповіді.
Отож, це моя перша зустріч із ним у ЧікаҐо – але про пастора О.Р. Гарбузюка я знав іще з Німеччини із 1948-го року. В цьому році, ми як родина (тато, мама і я) прийняли хрищення, де нам подарували євангельсько-баптистський журнал «Дорога Правди». Редактором цього журналу був пастор О.Р. Гарбузюк.
Після двох-річного перебування в ЧікаҐо, наша родина переїхала на східнє побережжя Америки, але в 1960-му році – ми з дружиною повернулись назад; влились в церковну працю де і продовжувались мої взаємовідносини із пастором О.Р. Гарбузюком. Слухаючи його глибокі проповіді я навчавсь глибоких доктрин Слова Божого, що і збагатило моє духовне життя.
Працюючи із молоддю – часто треба було звертатись до пастора за порадами і тут пастор О.Р. Гарбузюк завжди терпеливо і ясно помагав мені в моїх духовних потребах.
Пізніше, влившись в поширеній праці радіопередачі «Голос Євангелії в Україну», та в праці Об’єднання Українських Євангельсько-Баптистських Церков в США – знов мав нагоду і честь участувати і обсервовувати духовну і громадську працю пастора О.Р. Гарбузюка.
На початку цього, мого короткого свідоцтва, що стосується праці пастора О.Р. Гарбузюка – я цитував слова апостола Павла: «Я все можу в Тім, Хто мене підкріпляє, в Ісусі Христі.» Цим я і бажаю підкреслити, що пастор О.Р.Г. глибоко вірив у ці слова апостола і уводив це у всі сфери своєї праці на ниві Божії, та для добра свого народу. Отож, як треба було звернутись до губернатора штату, чи то до директора радіопередачі «Голос Америки», чи і навіть до самого президента Америки – то пасторові О.Р. Гарбузюкові вдавалось це – бо до цього він підходив із молитвою, вірою, та відвагою.
Все, що він міг зробити для свого Бога і для свого народу – він зробив; але ж і прийшов час для його відпочинку. А тепер його чекає нагорода від Бога.

Rev. Harbuziuk (second from left) apparently attended some sort of conference or lecture in Germany on September 8, 1948. (There is no other information on the back of the photo.)
Olexa takes his first-born for a stroll, while accompanied by friends.

Господь так сприяв праці Української Євангельсько-Баптистської Церкви, що в днях 12-14 липня 1947 року вона вже могла скликати свій другий з'їзд у Мюнхені, в столичному місті Баварії. На тому з'їзді було присутніх 57 репрезентантів від громад та 150 гостей. ...
До складу Церковної Ради входили проповідники: С. Нищик, Гр. Домашовець, З. Речун-Панько, Ф. Назаренко, М. Теслюк, Д. Марійчук, І. Підгорецький та І. Барчук.

This photo depicts one of the baptismal services officiated by Rev. Harbuziuk in Germany. It took place the afternoon of April 4, 1948 in a German church in Korbach. First, a service was held at 10 a.m. in the hall where the congregation normally gathered. The main sermon was preached by Rev. Stepan Nischik, president of the church council of the Ukrainian Baptist association in Germany, who came from Munich. Rev. Harbuziuk also preached. The choir from Cornberg sang. Lunch was served before the baptismal service began. Rev. Harbuziuk preached again. The man to the right is Wasyl Bereza (Василь Береза), who later was a member of the Chicago church and then when he retired he was a member of the church in Santa Barbara, California. Kateryna Lipinski (Катерина Ліпінська), who has been a longtime member of the Los Angeles church, says that she was the first person to be baptized by Rev. Harbuziuk after he was ordained. Her name before marriage was Kateryna Kulyk (Катерина Кулик). Interestingly, Rev. Harbuziuk traveled to Korbach, Germany, to baptize five people on Nov. 23, 1947. "Google maps" indicates that today the driving time from Cornberg to Korbach is about an hour and 50 minutes. I don't know whether somebody drove my father or whether he took a train or bus.
Life in Germany -- many beginnings:
Olexa was registered as a seminary student in Germany in 1945.
Here is another photo of the Cornberg congregation. The men next to Pastor Harbuziuk are Scottish missionary A.K. MacGregor and Karl Bytner. At far left are Dmytro Masluk, Alexandra Bilecka and Julia Myrosznyk. Seated are Mrs. Iwaszczenko (second from left) and Mr. Masluk's mother. At far right is Eugene Masluk; to his left is Mr. Myrosznyk, and behind him is Oleh Masluk. Next to Oleh is Tanya Daszkiewicz holding her son Steve, then Olya Bereza holding her son Steve.

Rev. Harbuziuk spent a few years in Germany during and after World War II.
He attended a seminary in Hamburg, Germany starting in 1943. Interestingly, when American and English planes started bombing Hamburg, the students and some professors evacuated to a town near the city of Cologne to continue their studies.
Also in Germany, Olexa was ordained, was the pastor of a church, edited a magazine and fathered his first two children before immigrating to the United States of America in August 1949.
By the way, the voyage by ship (aboard the USS General Taylor) took 10 days, and just about all of the passengers got seasick.
