Rev. olexa  Harbuziuk Legacy

Пастор олекса Романович Гарбузюк

Rev. Walter Sauchuk (Володимир Савчук) in 2011 while attending the 66th annual conference of the Ukrainian Evangelical Baptist Convention at the Ukrainian Evangelical Baptist Church in Crum Lynne, Pennsylvania.

Rev. Michael Jakubovich (Михайло Якубович), a member of the Ukrainian Baptist Church in North Port, Florida, was called home by the Lord today (Wednesday, December 9, 2020) at the age of 85. He died from Covid-19. He also suffered from Parkinson's disease.
Brother Jakubovich, who also was known among Americans as Michael Gordon, was a beloved and respected servant of the Lord in all the churches and church associations at which he was involved in various capacities.
Rev. Jakubovich’s first pastorate was in East Pittston, Maine (near Gardiner); then he was pastor in Manchester, New Hampshire; then in North Port, Florida.
He also served for 30 years as treasurer of the Ukrainian Evangelical Baptist Convention in the U.S. and for nearly as many years as treasurer of the All-Ukrainian Evangelical Baptist Fellowship (diaspora).
Michael was born in Ukraine in 1935. He was baptized in a Ukrainian Baptist church in Munich, Germany in 1948 along with his parents and others. The family left Germany from the port of Breman in September 1949 and arrived in a small town in New York, where a church was the sponsor for the family. After a few months, the family moved to Erie, Pennsylvania, then after six months Michael came with his family to Chicago and joined the Ukrainian Baptist Church of Chicago. The family moved again, this time to the state of Maine in June 1952.

Michael served in the U.S. Army in 1957-58, being stationed in Germany.
He met Ella Manahariw at a Ukrainian church conference and they married in June 1959.
Michael worked as a biochemist at the Illinois Institute of Technology Research Institute in Chicago.
Brother Jakubovich was deeply involved at the Ukrainian Baptist Church of Chicago. He sang bass in the choir, taught a Sunday school class, was a deacon, recorded solos for the radio program broadcast into Ukraine and was treasurer of that radio committee. He also served as president of the USA youth association for several years and was editor of the youth magazine.
In 1970, Brother Jakubovich and his family moved to Maine, where he became lay leader of the Ukrainian Baptist Church in East Pittston and also operated a chicken farm. He was ordained as a minister on Nov. 30, 1975. The congregation first met in the home of Michael's parents. Later, the parents purchased a former one-room schoolhouse and it was remodeled for use as a church building. The parents deeded the building to the congregation for free, according to Michael's brother. At its high point, the church numbered 35 members.
Mike was the coordinator of the third world congress of the All-Ukrainian Evangelical Baptist Youth Association, which was held August 20-25, 1979 at the Evangelical Baptist Camp near Ashford, Connecticut.
When a new wave of immigrants from Ukraine settled in Manchester in the early 1990s, Rev. Jakubovich traveled about two-and-a-half hours one way to serve the congregation at least once a month.
He retired to North Port, Florida in 2001, and eventually was asked to become pastor, which he did for about 10 years. He also sang in the choir.
His wife, Ella, preceded him in death this year on July 1. Condolences are extended to his daughter, Ruth (who helped care for her parents in their later years); his son, David; two grandchildren; two step-grandchildren and a brother, Ivan.

A closed-casket funeral service is scheduled for Monday, December 14, at 2 p.m. at Sarasota National Cemetery in Florida. Burial will follow. Social distancing and mask-wearing guidelines will be in effect.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, December 20, at 5 p.m. at the Ukrainian Baptist Church, 3950 Wall Lane, North Port, Florida.

John "Jerry" Shep (Ярослав Шепелявець), who grew up in the Ukrainian Baptist Church of Chicago and later became a Lutheran pastor, died June 25, 2020.

He battled cancer for a while and recently contracted pneumonia. He was 73 years old.

He studied at Minnesota State University, Mankato and earned his master of divinity degree in 1973 from Bethany Lutheran Theological Seminary in Mankato.

Rev. Shep founded the "Thoughts of Faith" radio ministry and broadcast programs in the Ukrainian language into Ukraine and the Soviet Union and later into the former Soviet Union from 1978 to 2000.

Brother Shep was bishop of the Ukrainian Lutheran Church, headquartered in Kyiv, from 1992 to 2000. He served at several Lutheran churches in the United States, most recently in Stoughton, Wisconsin.

He was born in Germany in 1947 and came to America with his parents in 1950, settling in Chicago.

Condolences are sent to his wife, Naomi; four  children; a grandchild; a sister; two brothers and other relatives. A private funeral service will be held Monday in Wisconsin, followed by interment. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
