U.S. Navy musician third class David A. Harbuziuk, son of Alex and Luba Harbuziuk, of Naperville, recently was selected as Junior Sailor of the Year of the Navy Band Northeast for 2009.
Harbuziuk, a 1998 graduate of Naperville Central High School, joined the Navy in January 2008 and was assigned to the Navy Band Northeast at Newport, R.I., in August 2008.
Besides receiving a medal, Harbuziuk is entitled to a four-day weekend and will attend a luncheon.
The certificate he received says: "This is to certify that the secretary of the Navy has awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal to musician third class David A. Harbuziuk, United States Navy, for professional achievement as trumpet instrumentalist, librarian and auxiliary security force watchstander for Navy Band Northeast, Newport, Rhode Island, from January to December 2009.
"A superb instrumentalist, Petty Officer Harbuziuk consistently performed above and beyond the call of duty, performing in more than 200 engagements throughout an 11-state area of responsibility, highlighting the Navy and its opportunities to over eight million people.
"As librarian, he exhibited superb organizational skills and attention to detail while cataloging and accounting for over 6,000 musical arrangements, method books, and recordings worth over $150,000.
"As auxiliary force watchstander, he vigilantly enforced base regulations and protected the assets of 44 tenant commands and 10,000 personnel on board Naval Station Newport.
"As a result, he was selected as the Navy Band Northeast 2009 Junior Sailor of the Year.
"Petty Officer Harbuziuk's professionalism, personal initiative and unswerving devotion to duty reflected credit upon himself and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service."
At Naperville Central High School, Harbuziuk was a trumpet player in the wind symphony and in the marching band. He also attended Ranchview and Meadow Glens elementary schools and Madison Junior High School.
He received a bachelor's degree from DePaul University in Chicago, and master's degrees from Baylor University in Waco, Texas, and the University of Akron in Ohio.
